Two cities, different rhythms. Decide what you want to do, then check travel, access and weather for your dates.

The short answer

Choose Bologna for a compact centre, porticoes and museums within relatively short transfers. Choose Budapest if you want to alternate the Danube, neighbourhoods, parks and thermal baths while allowing for journeys between the two banks.

This is an editorial suggestion, not a ranking. Cost and travel time depend on your starting point, booking date and group needs. Compare transport and accommodation before deciding.

How to spend two days

In Bologna, use one day for Piazza Maggiore, Pavaglione and Santo Stefano, and another for a museum or park. San Luca is a separate uphill outing for suitable weather and ability.

In Budapest, use a day for the Danube and centre, then choose City Park, a museum or a bath suitable for your group. Gellért is closed; Széchenyi normally excludes under-14s except for its stated specialist medical approval procedure.

Rain, children and accessibility

Bologna's porticoes can help between stops, but do not remove steps or crossings. In Budapest, keep an indoor venue near your chosen area in reserve; thermal baths are not a universal family alternative.

Check official venue pages, event calendars and transport 24–48 hours before departure. We avoid fixed prices and hours because they can change.
