An adaptable half-day through the porticoed centre. Treat the climb to San Luca as a separate outing.

A central route, step by step

Begin at Piazza Maggiore. Follow the Pavaglione portico towards the Archiginnasio, return towards Piazza Cavour and Via Farini, then continue through the central streets to Piazza Santo Stefano. These areas are among the UNESCO Porticoes components. Choose the side of each street and crossings according to current conditions.

Allow at least half a day if you want to enter a building, stop for food or visit a museum. This is an outline rather than a timed navigation route. Check a current map and any works or diversions before setting out.

Make San Luca a separate excursion

The portico towards the Sanctuary of San Luca begins around Porta Saragozza and continues past the Meloncello Arch. Bologna Welcome gives about 3.8 km from the gate to the sanctuary. The uphill walk takes time, suitable footwear and an honest assessment of your ability.

Do not automatically add it to the central walk. Set aside another half-day, try just the first stretch, or check the available transport. In heavy rain or on slippery ground, choose an indoor alternative.

Rain, paving and accessibility

Many porticoes offer shelter, but crossings, steps, slopes and surfaces vary. With a stroller or reduced mobility, keep to a few central stops and check entry at each venue. The uphill San Luca route should not be treated as barrier-free.

If it rains, focus on Piazza Maggiore, Pavaglione and one indoor visit. Check the venue's opening, tickets and booking requirements, and TPER updates if taking a bus.
